Privacy Policy

The short version

Second Half Network is a private, invite-only mentorship platform. Privacy is a founding design constraint, not an afterthought: no member names or personal details ever appear on the public site, your documents are never publicly accessible, we do not sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers, and you can ask us to delete everything at any time.

Some sections below describe what happens when a school or athletic department runs the program for its own athletes. We call that a partner school. As of the date at the top of this page we have no partner school, so nothing in this policy that depends on one is happening yet.

What we collect

Most of what we hold, you or your mentor gave us directly. Two things did not come from you: the sign-in activity described in the last bullet, which the site records as you use it, and, if your school sent us a roster or we invited you before you had an account, your name, school email and sport, which reached us that way first:

• Account and profile information: your name, email address, and, for student-athletes, your university, sport, class year, and career interests; for mentors, your title, company, industry, background, and LinkedIn if you choose to add it.
• Documents you upload or create: your one-page resume and about-me page (including pages generated for you by the about-me builder from answers you provide).
• Program activity: applications, interview and meeting records, goals and check-ins, messages between matched members, and program outcomes.
• Technical basics: IP addresses appear in short-lived infrastructure request logs for security purposes. We use strictly functional cookies (a signed session cookie and a timezone preference). No advertising trackers, no cross-site tracking, no third-party analytics pixels.
• Sign-in activity: the calendar dates you used the portal, kept as dates with no time of day. Separately we store the moment of your most recent sign-in, and the moment you last opened the announcements thread, each as a single timestamp that is overwritten rather than kept as a history. We do not record which pages you looked at. We use this to understand how the program is being used. If we ever have a partner school, we would report participation to it as a group total only, never as a record of any one person.

We do not collect Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial or payment information, or health information.

How we use it

• To run the mentorship program: matching, applications, interviews, scheduling, messaging, and outcome tracking.
• To send you program email (invitations, reminders, confirmations) from SHN@secondhalfnetwork.com.
• To power optional AI features you choose to use (the about-me builder, resume enhancer, mentor recommendations, and the busy-schedule reader). These send only the specific fields needed to our AI provider (Anthropic) under commercial terms that prohibit training on your data. For the busy-schedule reader specifically: the calendar screenshot or PDF you upload is sent to our AI provider as it is, so whatever is visible in it is visible to them for that one request, and it is read to find busy time ranges. We never store the image, and the only thing we save is the times you explicitly confirm; event names, people and locations are not saved. Most AI output is a draft you review before anything happens with it. The one exception is the about-me builder: what it writes is saved as your about-me document when you finish, which is the version mentors read, so read it before you finish and rewrite anything that is not how you would put it. You can replace that document at any time.
• To report program results to a partner athletic department, if we ever have one, in aggregate, de-identified form only (for example, the number of meetings held, goals completed, or how many members logged in during a given week), never your personal details and never a record of any one person’s activity.

What we never do

• We never sell your data.
• We never share your data with advertisers, ad networks, or data brokers.
• We never use your data to train AI models, and our AI provider is contractually barred from doing so.
• We never show member names or private details on the public website.
• We never disclose your data to law enforcement without a valid warrant or subpoena.

Who can see your information

• You can see and edit your own profile and documents.
• A mentor can see your profile, resume, and about-me only after you apply to that mentor. Messages are visible only to the two people in a matched or interviewing pair.
• Platform administrators (the Second Half Network founders) can access data strictly to operate and support the program, through named, least-privilege accounts.
• No school or athletic department has access today. If that ever changes, a partner institution would see aggregate program statistics only, never individual records.

How we protect it

All traffic is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+). Data is encrypted at rest (AES-256) in managed cloud infrastructure located in the United States (Vercel and Neon, both built on AWS). Uploaded documents are never publicly addressable and are served only through a per-request authorization check. Passwords are stored only as strong one-way hashes. Login links and codes are single-use, expire automatically, and are rate limited. Every page and route that shows member data checks the signed-in person's role on the server before it returns anything.

Who processes data for us

We use a small set of infrastructure providers, each bound by commercial terms covering security and data protection: Vercel (hosting), Neon (database), Resend (transactional email), Anthropic (optional AI features; no training on your data), and Zoom (meeting links). If you turn on notifications, your device is registered with your browser's push service, which is Apple, Google or Mozilla depending on the browser, and notifications are delivered through it. Our own storage and processing stay in the United States.

How long we keep things, and how to be deleted

Your account and profile carry across semester cycles. The activity inside a cycle does not: when a new cycle starts, we archive the results and clear that cycle's applications, messages, meetings and check-ins. What survives is the record of what happened, not the conversation it happened in.

You can replace your documents at any time, and you can ask us to delete your account by emailing SHN@secondhalfnetwork.com. Here is exactly what that does, because it is not a single word. Your documents are deleted from storage. Your name, email address, contact details, profile and password are destroyed, and the account can no longer be signed into. What stays is the shape of your mentorship: that a match happened, that meetings took place, and any feedback or outcome recorded against it, with you shown as a former member. We keep that because it is your mentor's record as much as yours, and because removing it would change programme totals we have already reported to a school.

Two honest limits. Deletion removes your data from the live service; it does not reach the encrypted backups our database provider keeps on its own schedule, and we cannot promise a date for that on their behalf. And an email already delivered to someone's inbox cannot be recalled.

Your choices and rights

• Access or correct your information: you can edit your profile yourself, and for anything else email us and we will provide it.
• Delete your account: email us. We honour it wherever you live, and the section above says exactly what is destroyed and what remains.
• Stop the emails: every message we send carries an unsubscribe link, and it works without signing in.
• The AI tools an athlete uses are optional and skipping them costs you nothing. Mentors should know that when an athlete asks for recommended mentors, the directory information you publish inside the platform, your name, title, employer and background, is sent to our AI provider to produce that shortlist.
• Questions, concerns, or complaints go to SHN@secondhalfnetwork.com and are handled directly by the founders.

Age and student data

The platform is for college student-athletes and professional mentors; it is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. Most member information is provided to us directly by each member. Where a roster reaches us, whether from a school or from anyone else, or where we invite an athlete before they have an account, we hold the name, school email and sport that reached us that way until they take the account over or ask us to remove it. If a partner institution ever shares education records with us, we will handle them under terms compliant with FERPA.
